Dr Barbara Douglas Edinburgh Psychologist

Counselling Psychologist in Edinburgh

Are you looking for a therapist or wondering whether therapy might help you?

My name is Barbara Douglas and I am an experienced Counselling Psychologist based in Edinburgh. I am Chartered with the British Psychological Society and Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

I work with people from many backgrounds and with a range of issues. I am an integrative counselling psychologist, able to work in a number of approaches depending on your needs and am committed to offering a high standard of professional therapeutic care.

Many people experience emotional distress at some point in their lives, often turning to family and friends for support. However, sometimes this is not enough.

Regular therapy sessions give you time to think and to talk about the feelings you have about yourself and other people; they also give you space to look at what is happening in your life at present and what has happened in the past.

Dr Barbara Douglas, Consulting Psychologist

A little bit about my background and experience: I am a Counselling Psychologist, Chartered with the British Psychological Society and Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council.

I lived in the North West of England for many years where, following postgraduate research in the field of occupational stress, I began my career as a psychology lecturer in the mid 1980s, combining teaching with the life of a young family.

My professional interest moved increasingly towards the therapeutic aspects of psychology and counselling. I embarked on training and qualified first as a counsellor in 1992, subsequently becoming a Chartered Counselling Psychologist in 1995.

I worked in the field of eating disorders becoming clinical director of an NHS Trust funded adult eating disorders service, a role I remained in for fourteen years.

Following relocation back to my native Edinburgh I currently work in private practice where I offer therapy, supervision and consultancy.  You can come to see me for therapy through a variety of routes and referrals including self referral, private health insurers (including BUPA and Aviva), Employee Assistance Programmes, GP referral and Case Management Companies.

I aim to provide a safe and engaging space for anyone experiencing emotional difficulties or wanting to explore their life situation.

I also offer supervision and consultancy and I am on the British Psychological Society’s Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors. I provide supervision and consultancy to in-training and qualified psychologists, counsellors and psychotherapists. You may be independent or alternatively employed by statutory, private or voluntary sector services.

I was Chair of the British Psychological Society’s Division of Counselling psychology between 2009 and 2011 and in 2011 was enormously privileged to be awarded the British Psychological Society’s Practitioner of the Year Award.

I have particular interests in the area of the history of psychiatry and completed my doctoral research into this at Exeter University.  I am co-editor for the Handbook of Counselling Psychology, published in 2010 and Lead Editor for the Fourth Edition which is currently in process.

What is Therapy?

The practice of therapy is often a meeting between two people where, at the outset, neither may know where the journey will lead.

Sometimes the meeting may be with a couple or a group rather than an individual. In the therapeutic relationship, therapist and client work towards a mutual understanding of the client and their concerns.

In the context of a supportive environment, further exploration of this shared meaning facilitates the development of personal solutions and resources to the discomfort or distress that may have brought you to therapy.

This may be about dealing with a particular issue which is causing you distress, for example anxiety, depression, an eating disorder, relationship or family problems. Equally, it may be about making lifestyle or relationship changes, finding a more comfortable way of being with yourself or simply a desire for further self understanding.

Therapy can be short or long term, lasting for just a few sessions or taking place over many months, depending on your individual needs.

Contact me in confidence to discuss your therapy options and make an appointment.

Supervision for Professional Therapists in Edinburgh

Supervision exists to protect clients, and to enable therapists to provide the best possible therapeutic service to their clients. It does this by providing the therapist with a space, and consultative relationship, in which they can reflect and examine their client work and their own well being in relation to their practice.

Depending on the professional stage of the therapist, supervision offers a supportive, mentoring and learning environment in which a non defensive exploration of the work can be undertaken.

It facilitates reflection on the therapist's way of relating to the client through discussion of their own feelings, thoughts, behaviour and approach. Most professional bodies for counselling psychology, counselling and psychotherapy require members to be in supervision as a part of their practice. Confidentiality is maintained and, although some client details are shared within the supervision relationship, these are not traceable back to specific individual clients.

I am on the British Psychological Society's Register of Applied Psychology Practice Supervisors and have many years experience of providing supervision to therapists, both in-training and experienced. You may be training in counselling psychology, counselling, and psychotherapy and perhaps near the outset of your journey as a therapist or may have many years experience. I would expect to take into account that the respective requirements of each will differ.(View BPS Supervisor Certification here)

Our working contexts have significant influence on our practice and I offer supervision to therapists who work either independently or within organizations. The latter may be in the statutory, voluntary or private sectors where, with the organization's agreement, we can establish a contractual funding arrangement for supervision.

Please contact me if you would like to discuss the possibility of supervision or to make an initial appointment to meet.
